History of the College
Thiruvalluvar
Government Arts College, Rasipuram is unique in the sense that it was
established decades back during the year 1968 in a rural area, providing
quality education with five pre-university courses. Within a short span of one
year it was upgraded with degree classes to provide education to the students
belonging to the nearby financially backward people. With the financial aid of
the local people, the infrastructure of the college was expanded and improved.
This resulted in the introduction of many new courses and new buildings were
constructed in the year 1971. The college was then affiliated to Madras
University, and after the establishment of Periyar University, it is now
affiliated to Periyar University, Salem 636 011.
The
academic year 1985-86 saw the establishment of B.A. History - Evening College
enabling the employed in the vicinity to equip themselves with a degree for
their development. As the Department of Computer Science continued to equip
itself with upgraded infrastructure, a new building was established. The
college further flourished during 2003-2004 with an addition of three main
subjects viz B.A. Tamil Literature, B.Com. and M.Sc. Chemistry as
self-financing courses. In addition to these courses, M.Sc. Mathematics and
M.A. Public Administration courses were started as self-financing wing in
2005-2006. All these courses were upgraded as aided courses in 2006-2007. In
the academic year 2011-2012, M.A. Tamil and M.Com. were introduced.
In
the Academic year 2012-2013, one UG course - B.Sc. (Nutrition and Dietetics),
five PG courses - M.A. English, M.A. History, M.A. Political Science, M.Sc.
Physics, M.Sc. Computer Science, five M.Phil. Programmes - M.Phil. Tamil (Part
Time/Full Time), M.Phil. Commerce (Part Time/Full Time), M.Phil. Mathematics
(Part Time/Full Time), M.Phil. Physics (Part Time/Full Time), M.Phil. Chemistry
(Part Time/Full Time) and three research programmes - Ph.D. Tamil (Part
Time/Full Time), Ph.D. Mathematics (Part Time/Full Time), Ph.D. Chemistry (Part
Time/Full Time) were introduced. During the academic year 2015-2016 one UG
course i.e. B.A. Economics and two research courses - M.Phil. English (Part
Time/Full Time) and Ph.D. (Part Time/Full Time) English were introduced.
Department
of Political Science - Profile
The Department of Political Science was started in the year 1981 and so far, Twenty Nine Batches of students had completed their Under Graduate Course in Political Science. It was upgraded into Post Graduate Department by starting the study of Public Administration in Post-graduate as Self-Finance Course in the year 2005. All the Self- Finance Courses of the Post-graduate were regularized by the Government of Tamil Nadu in the year 2006. Five Batches of Students had completed their Post Graduate Course in Public Administration under the incharge of the Department of Political Science. Then, the study of Public Administration was bifurcated from the Department of Political Science as a separate department on 01.12.2011. A Post-Graduate course in Political Science was started from the academic year 2012-2013. M.Phil Political Science Full Time Course Started from the academic year 2013-2014. The department has conducted two National seminars, one state level seminar and two workshops for rural Women. A three months certificate course on Human Rights conducted from 2011 to 2016.Ph.D Political Science Part Time/ Full Time introduced from 2018.
